Carolyn “Jean” Shaffer, age 82, of New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Jefferson Manor. Born on February 26, 1943, in Indianola, Pennsylvania, she was the middle of 5 children to the late Darl and Ida (Beer) Crawford. Jean married Elbert “Sonny” Shaffer on October 6, 1962. She worked in accounting for the Leader Vindicator, many years at McCauley Trucking, and lastly as an insurance administrator for McRail Insurance. She took great pride in her work and treasured the relationships she built with her coworkers. She also served on the New Bethlehem Library Board, where she generously gave her time and shared her love of books and reading with others. Throughout her life, she was known for her kindness, warmth, strong work ethic, and unwavering dedication to her family. Besides reading, she loved playing cards, board games, and building puzzles. She cherished getting together with her Card Club friends, and treasured spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband; 2 brothers, Sam Crawford and Dick Crawford; 2 daughters Dorinda Bugos of Pittsburgh and Michelle Dwyer (Dave) of Wilmington, DE; 6 grandchildren Bridget Kropiewnicki (Joe), Katie Dwyer, Maggie Baird (James), Kim Dwyer, Tom Dwyer, and Danny Bugos; and 3 great grandchildren Mark and Madison Kropiewnicki, and Lilly Baird. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Darl “Bud” Crawford, sister Cheryl Metz, nephew Brad Crawford, and grandson David Patrick Dwyer. The family welcomes visitors on Sunday, February 1, 2026, from 2-6 pm at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Additional visitation from 10-11 am on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the New Bethlehem First Church of God, with a funeral service immediately following at 11 am.
