Rev. Roger A. Smith, 98, of New Bethlehem, took his Savior’s hand and went home to be with Jesus, on Wednesday morning, July 31, 2024. Born in New Kensington on January 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Urban A. and Mary Viola “Ollie” (George) Smith. He was married on August 7, 2010, to Bonnie Sue Heckathorn and she preceded him in death on June 17, 2015. He graduated from New Kensington High School in 1944. He then served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during WW II from 1944 to 1945. He graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1951 as well as Drew University with a Master of Divinity in 1958. From 1964 to 1994 Rev. Smith served in extension ministries in Mississippi from Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served for over 58 years in the ministry. The last church he served was the Putneyville United Methodist Church. He also had a love for music and enjoyed singing the old hymns. He was a member of the Walter W. Craig Post # 354 of New Bethlehem American Legion and served as chaplain for many years. He was the last of his immediate family. In addition to his parents and his wife, Roger was preceded in death by a sister, Esther M. Charlesworth and three brothers, Byron Smith, Carmen Smith, and William David Smith. Visitation will be on Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bud Davis and Pastor John Phillips co-officiating. Immediately following the funeral service, the Walter W. Craig Post # 354 of New Bethlehem American Legion will honor their fallen comrade. Interment will be in the Putneyville Cemetery, Armstrong County.
