Donald M. Baker, 98, formerly of New Bethlehem, died Sunday evening, August 28, 2016 at the Clarview Nursing and Rehab. Center in Sligo where he was a resident for the past six years. He was born on December 22, 1917 in Daugherty Township, Beaver County, the son of the late Walter Maywood and Esther (Fye) Baker. He was married on October 19, 1946 to Trudie Mae (Bish) and she preceded him in death on September 1, 1997.

Don graduated from Hawthorn High School in 1936. He served his country with the United States Army Air Corp. during WW II, serving from June 1942 to January 1946 in Honolulu, Hawaii where he was an airplane and engine mechanic. He started working in 1937 for the A & P in New Bethlehem before entering the war and at the A & P in Kittanning after the war where he was a produce manager and retired from there in 1979.

Don was a lifetime member of the New Bethlehem Lodge # 522 F & AM where he was a Past Master. He belonged to the Coudersport Consistory, the Moose, VFW, and was a lifetime member of the F.O.E. , all of New Bethlehem. He was a lifetime member of the Walter W. Craig Post # 354 American Legion of New Bethlehem where he was an adjutant and financial officer for 33 years and was a past District Commander. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in New Bethlehem and served as an elder.

He is survived by a daughter, Peggy Lou Shaffer of Fairmount City, eight grandchildren, Jackyln Lou Painter and her husband, Jim, of Limestone, Timothy Shaffer of Miola, Michael Shaffer and his wife, Leslie of Salem, Oregon, Amy Jo Beckwith and her husband, John of Clarion, Becky Sue Harriger and her husband, Mike of Sligo, Judy Kay Shaffer of Clarion, Trudy Rae Reinsel and her husband, Dave of Frogtown, and Andrew King Shaffer of Butler, fourteen great grandchildren, eleven great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Trudie, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Carl S. Shaffer, a brother, Wayne Baker, and a son-in-law, Dean Shaffer.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 30, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Jay Shaffer and Clarion Forest VNA Hospice Chaplain Randy Evans co-officiating. Immediately following the funeral service the Walter W. Craig Post 354 American Legion of New Bethlehem will honor their fallen comrade. Interment will be in the Hawthorn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made in memory of Don to the Clarion Forest VNA Hospice at 261 Perkins Road Clarion, Pa. 16214.
