Darlene loved God and faithfully attended Distant Baptist Church. She cherished a small Bible she had received in her youth in recognition of 14 years of perfect Sunday School attendance. For many years, she served in children’s ministry and coordinated Vacation Bible School, where her creativity shone through in the craft projects she planned. She also enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening and shopping at Boscov’s. In the early years of her ministry, the church women gathered regularly to hand-stitch quilts for the missionary cupboard, blessing each visiting missionary with a handmade quilt.

Darlene’s grandchildren treasure memories of playing Uno in her rooster-filled kitchen, enjoying sleepovers, and spending summers swimming in the pool. They always knew Grandma’s house had the best snacks: cupboards filled with sweets and a refrigerator stocked with Yoo-hoo, pop, Klondike bars, and fudgesicles.

Cooking was Darlene’s love language. She delighted in feeding everyone, especially her grandchildren, who will miss her raspberry milkshakes, cookies, rolls, cheesecake bites, and apple dumplings. No one ever left Grandma’s house with an empty stomach—though they may have left with a stomachache from all the sugar.

Grandma’s door was always open. She went out of her way to give her grandchildren whatever they needed, whether caring for them when they were home sick from school or showering them with gifts at Christmas. She attended every school event she could, even when it meant traveling out of her way.

When her great-grandchildren came along, she cared for them with the same devotion—spoiling them with food and gifts and playfully teasing them with her cane.

Most importantly, her grandchildren always knew that God came first in Grandma’s life. Darlene shared Scripture and Bible stories with them and carried a purse large enough to hold both her Bible and her snacks.

She kept a note card in the front of her Bible bearing the following message:

Spiritual Attire

“Put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and lying.” — Colossians 3:8–9

“Put on tender mercies (panties), kindness (bra), humbleness (pantyhose), meekness (slip), longsuffering (blouse), forbearing one another (skirt), forgiveness (sweater), peace (shoes), thankfulness (necklace), and love (perfume).” — Colossians 3:12–15

“Putting them on is an act of will, not a feeling or emotion. By faith, keep these garments in your prayer closet.” — Philippians 4:8

Darlene was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by many until those who remain in Christ are reunited with her.

The family extends special thanks to Nelson’s Golden Years Personal Care Home and 365 Hospice. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation to Distant Baptist Church.
