Obituaries

Joseph D. McEwen (Joe) passed after battling a recurrence of cancer. Joe was the son of H. Frank and Marie B. McEwen, who preceded him in death. Joe is survived by his soul mate, Sharon Roxbury, a step-son, Christopher and wife Kimberly Roxbury of Longwood, FL their two children, Jean and Scarlett. Step-daughters, Rebecca Baldwin of Clarion and Rachael Hornberger of Allison Park. His sister and husband, Barb and Dave Stewart of Colorado Springs, three nephews, David Andrew Stewart of Blairsville, Patrick Stewart and Shawn Stewart. In addition to his parents Joe had an infant sister and his brother Harry who passed.

Joe was a graduate of Redbank Valley High School and Penn State University. He was Director of Clarion County 9-1-1 Center and Emergency Mgmt from 1984 until 2002, when he retired to attend college and receive a second Bachelors Degree from the Pennsylvania State University and MBA from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Returning to the work force as an IT administrator in Boyers from 2011 until his retirement in 2020.

In previous years he was a member with the New Bethlehem Fire Company and a paramedic with the ambulance service. He rediscovered amateur radio in 2019 and subsequently became Amateur Extra Class. A member in the Straight Key Century Club and the Long Island CW Club.

He had season tickets to Penn State Football and enjoyed tailgating with his friends over many years.Joe’s passion for cooking took him to Colorado to attend the BBQ University with Steven Raichlen. Anyone who has had any of Joe’s food will tell you his cooking was always the best. He was an avid reader and loved to watch classic movies. He loved to travel to Pittsburgh to take in all the restaurants, concerts and baseball games. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Pittsburgh Penguins. He loved spending time at camp either around the fire ring or fishing.

Family was important to Joe, he traveled to Florida when the two grandchildren were born and for many birthdays until his health made it difficult to travel. Times spent in Colorado with his sister and her husband always brought home some fond memories. He had a gentle heart and a love for all animals, especially his golden retrievers and cats.

His family would like to thank his best friend, Barry and his neighbor Bruce for all their help over the years. Also, the Clarion Cancer Center and all health care providers for his excellent care and their compassion.
