Obituaries

Marie Catherine Smith, 94, passed away early Saturday morning, January 24, 2026, at Edgewood Heights in New Bethlehem.

She was born on February 24, 1931, in Coolspring, a daughter of the late Oria Edward and Mina (Reitz) Kerner.

She graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1949.

She then married Vernon Richard Smith on June 12, 1951, and he preceded her in death on March 28, 2009.

She worked at Cameron Factory in Reynoldsville, the Pa. Memorial Home and the Holiday Inn in Brookville. She was a center director for Area Agency of Aging in Brookville, and her later years she spent as a housewife.

She was a member of the Kinport Assembly of God Church in Cherry Tree for ten years and served as a Sunday School teacher and was also a youth leader. She was a member of Brookville Assembly of God for almost twenty-two years and was a Sunday School teacher, Superintendent, assistant Superintendent, and mission’s secretary. She was a member of the Punxsutawney Assembly of God Church and taught adult Sunday School classes there.

She is survived by a daughter; Kathy Shirey and her husband, Emerson, of Mayport, two granddaughters; Angela Mills and her husband, Todd, of Oak Ridge and Lorrie McDonald and her husband, Seth, of Seminole, three great-granddaughters; Ciara Mills, Kayla Toy and Arianna McDonald and a great-grandson Christian McDonald, four great-great-grandsons; Aiden and Chase Scott, Rowan Bladel and Kolston Smith.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters; Maxine Seger, Mazy Shaffer, Josephine Kerner, and Dollie Brocious, and five brothers; Jack, John, Arnold, Darl, and Edward Kerner.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Bob Ryver officiating.

Interment will take place in the Coolspring Cemetery.
